Pharmacogenomics

testing and consultations

what is pharmacogenomics?

Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is the study of the influence of genetic variation on drug response with the aim of increasing the efficacy and safety of current and future treatments. Over 98% of individuals carry at least one pharmacogenetic variant that can impact medications safety and efficacy.

HOW MUCH DOES THE TEST COST, AND WILL INSURANCE COVER IT?

Some insurances cover the test and some don’t. It also depends on your patient and their history of medication response/failure. The good news is, the lab I have partnered with has one of the lowest out-of-pocket costs available. Also, most FSA/HSA accounts cover the test.

I DIDN’T LEARN ABOUT THIS IN SCHOOL. WHAT DO I DO WITH THE RESULTS?

Don’t worry about this! When you have a medication expert on your team, we take care of everything for you. This is what we specialize in. We also provide education for clinic staff if desired.

  • Adverse drug reactions are the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S.

  • Medication Mgmt

Comprehensive Medication Management is a process that leverages medication experts in collaborative practice with physicians leading to a holistic, person-centered approach to an individual’s medication use.

  • pharmacogenomics

Pharmacogenomics is a tool that uses DNA to help us determine which medications to choose first and which ones could cause harm. It has been proven to reduce hospitalizations, reduce adverse drug events by at least 30%, and overall improve patients’ quality of life.

  • proactive > reactive

About 75% of office visits involve drug therapy. Nearly everyone (95-99%) has variants in their genome that impact how they will respond to a medication. Adverse drug reactions affect around 40% of patients undergoing pharmacologic treatments. This is why prevention is key.
